Vice President, American K9 Interdiction

Tim Baird is a nationally recognized canine detection expert and executive leader with more than 30 years of experience developing, training, and managing specialized detector dog programs supporting federal, military, law enforcement, and international security organizations. As Vice President of American K9 Interdiction, Tim provides strategic leadership and operational oversight for advanced canine detection programs focused on explosives detection, personnel screening, narcotics interdiction, and emerging security threats.

Widely regarded as an authority in explosives detection and Vapor Wake® operations, Tim has dedicated his career to advancing canine capabilities designed to identify body-worn explosives, concealed threats, and other high-risk hazards in dynamic environments. His expertise has supported security operations at schools, transportation hubs, government facilities, large public venues, and critical infrastructure sites worldwide.

Prior to joining American K9 Interdiction’s executive leadership team, Tim served as Director of Training for AMK9/Vapor Wake, where he led the development and deployment of more than 500 operational detector dog teams. He was responsible for training standards, instructor development, curriculum design, and quality assurance programs supporting domestic and international deployments.

Before AMK9, Tim spent nearly 15 years as Chief Canine Instructor at Auburn University’s Canine Training Center, where he directed specialized detector dog programs for federal and international agencies. During his tenure, he led training initiatives involving IED detection, explosives detection, narcotics detection, and chemical detection capabilities. He also served as the lead instructor for the United States Marine Corps IED Detector Dog Program and participated in both classified and non-classified research programs focused on advancing canine detection technologies.

Tim began his law enforcement career with the Johnson County Sheriff’s Department before serving as a Canine Handler and Trainer with the Sullivan County Sheriff’s Office in Tennessee. During his service, he conducted operational deployments with tracking and detection dogs, trained K9 teams, and was honored as K9 Officer of the Year in 2000.

Throughout his career, Tim has supported mission requirements for numerous federal agencies, including the Department of Defense (DoD), Department of Homeland Security (DHS), Department of Energy (DOE), Transportation Security Administration (TSA), U.S. Capitol Police, U.S. Coast Guard, Federal Protective Service, Amtrak, Technical Support Working Group (TSWG), and international partners. His extensive experience includes federal contract management, operational readiness, handler development, explosives safety, behavior conditioning, and integrating canine capabilities with emerging security technologies.

Class: Countering Concealed Threats with Mobile Detection K9s

Concealed threats present a growing challenge for schools, government facilities, transportation hubs, public venues, and critical infrastructure. Traditional security measures often focus on fixed checkpoints and visible deterrence, leaving vulnerabilities that can be exploited by individuals carrying concealed weapons, explosives, or other dangerous materials.

This course examines how Mobile Detection K9 teams provide a proactive, flexible, and highly effective layer of protection through personnel screening and facility security operations. Participants will learn how detector dog teams are deployed to identify concealed firearms, explosives, and other threats while screening individuals in motion, monitoring crowd environments, and securing vulnerable areas such as HVAC systems, ventilation networks, entry points, and other critical infrastructure components.
