Beloved CHP drug-sniffing dog Hac dies, leaves massive legacy

NORTHERN CALIFORNIA – A retired California Highway Patrol canine who seized hundreds of pounds of illegal drugs during his career has died.

Hac, an 11-year-old retired CHP Northern Division canine, passed away peacefully on Friday surrounded by CHP officers and his family. He served the State of California from 2017 until his retirement on May 16, 2023.

During his 6-year career, Hac was responsible for the seizure of approximately 340 pounds of methamphetamine, 21 pounds of heroin, 9 pounds of fentanyl, 3 pounds of cocaine, 1,200 pounds of marijuana and $948,000 in U.S. currency tied to illegal narcotics. He also physically apprehended 2 suspects, including 1 subject in remote Trinity County wanted for homicide.
