Police K-9 Odin stops jewelry thief

NORTH BEND — Early Friday morning North Bend Police responded to a burglar alarm at Jurgens Jewelers on Newmark Street.
Officers quickly found a broken window in the back of the shop and could hear movement in the building. Specifically they heard the sounds of things breaking and saw the suspect attempting to hide inside the building.
Oregon State Police assisted NBPD and set up a perimeter, and the Coos County Sheriff’s Office K-9 Odin was brought in to sniff out where the suspect was hiding in the building. Odin not only found the suspect but also helped apprehend him.
Although it seems excessive to call sheriff’s office K-9 unit for a fairly simple burglary it was the right call.
“When you arrive on a scene you only have a few officers to hold the perimeter and you don’t know how many people might be in the building, so brining in a dog is the right decision,” North Bend police chief Robert Kappelman said.
Twenty-year-old Bradley Harp found by police inside of the jewelry store with approximately $19,000 worth of stolen jewelry from the shop in his possession. Harp was lodged in Coos county Jail on charges of criminal mischief I, burglary II, and Theft I.
