Man jailed for drug charges after exiting bus

ASHLAND, Ky. – A new agreement between Kentucky law enforcement led to the arrest of a Detroit man Wednesday as he was allegedly found with a large amount of heroin after exiting a Greyhound bus from Michigan.

Kamario Jaqueal James, 20, of Detroit, was charged with trafficking heroin, importing heroin, possession of a controlled substance and fleeing and evading police on foot. He was also jailed on an active warrant out of Carter County.

According to a news release from the Boyd County Sheriff’s Department, the sheriff’s department and the Flatwoods Police Department were working a narcotics investigation at the Ashland Bus Station on Wednesday when a Greyhound bus from Detroit arrived.

Officers saw a man, later identified as James, exit the bus and walk around the parking lot for several minutes on his phone before leaving the property and walking up and down Winchester and Greenup avenues.

Deputies allegedly saw the man getting into a vehicle on Greenup Avenue before they started to follow the vehicle.

Police stopped the vehicle due to an alleged traffic violation.

Three subjects, including James, were in the vehicle and removed while a K-9 unit was walked around the vehicle before allegedly indicating there were drugs in the vehicle.

When deputies subsequently went to place James under arrest, he allegedly fled on foot, which started a pursuit through downtown Ashland. He was soon after caught and placed into custody, at which time officers allegedly found money and a large amount of heroin inside a peanut butter jar.

The combined effort was part of a new “back-ups” agreement, which gives the Boyd County Sheriff’s Department jurisdiction in Greenup County and the Flatwoods Police Department jurisdiction in Boyd County to assist departments in combating the drug epidemic.

James is housed at the Boyd County Detention Center.
