Huron’s K9 service dog retires after six years

Now retired after six years of hard work, Cody, the Huron Police Department’s K9 service dog, will remain part of Detective Derek Layher’s family.
City commissioners on Monday agreed with their appointed appraisal committee’s recommendation — after Cody was declared to be “surplus property” — that Layher be permitted to purchase the dog for $1.
Cody and Layher, as his handler, trained continually throughout the K9’s police career, said Police Chief Kevin Van Diepen.
“Detective Layher and PSD (police service dog) Cody have worked as partners since we acquired Cody; even more than this, Cody has become part of Detective Layher’s family as he has lived with them since being purchased,” he said. Read More
