Mike began his career with the Nebraska State Patrol (NSP) in 1978. During his tenure with the NSP, Mike was integral in the establishment, training, and supervision of the NSP Police Service Dog Unit. In addition to serving the NSP as a Trooper, Sergeant, Lieutenant, and Captain, Mike also handled the agencies only dedicated Tactical Deployment and Cadaver Dog. Mike has achieved the rank of Teaching Judge, the highest rank in the German K-9 Training System, and currently serves as a Judge in the following disciplines: Patrol, SWAT, Cadaver, Narcotics, and Explosives
