Basic Police Canine Course
The Hernando Police Department in conjunction with the Mississippi Law Enforcement Officers Association (MLEOA) will be hosting the 2021 Basic Police Canine course in Hernando Mississippi. There is no cost for this nine-week course which will start January 11 and run through March 12, 2021 and is open to any Law Enforcement Agency. This is a Mississippi Board on Law Enforcement Officers Standards and Training approved course and officers who attend the course will receive 320 hours of continuing education for the first eight weeks. The ninth week is set aside for testing and certification of the new teams through the National Narcotics Dog Association or NNDDA. Members of MLEOA will have their certifications paid for non-members or students outside the state will have to pay for their own certifications.
The course will cover the following areas for Dual Purpose Canine teams, but can be adjusted for Single Purpose teams:
- Detection (Narcotics and Explosive)
- Obedience / Control
- Patrol Activities
- Tracking / Area Search
- Evidence Recovery
- Criminal Apprehension
- K9 Case Law
- K9 First Aid
- Realistic Scenario Training Events
