New Vilas Co. K9 unit raises funds, promotes gun safety at county fair

A Belgian Malinois named Stitch joined the Vilas County Sherrif’s Office in June, making it the second drug detecting dog to join the force since fellow K9, Helo.

In Eagle River Saturday, Stitch got a chance to meet members of the community. Stitch interacted with kids and demonstrated bite skills at the Vilas County Fair.

Deputy Amanda Drewsen says meet and greets allow people to see the animals up close and ask handlers questions about the K9 program.

“It shows people that an animal that we use for working can also be an animal that you can pet and that you can interact with. Sometimes you don’t always get that with the K9s but this one obviously is very social,” said Drewsen. Read More
